The lighthouse was built in 1849 on the southwestern cape of the island of Dugi otok, 35 km west of the city of Zadar. The villages of Veli Rat, Verunic and Polje are 3 km away, while the ferry port in Bribinj is 20 km away.

      Details of the lighthouse:
The lighthouse, surrounded by pine trees, beautiful bays and pebble beaches, is considered one of the most beautiful on the Adriatic. Veli Rat offers an unforgettable experience - splendid views from the 40 m high lighthouse tower.

The lighthouse has one four-bed and one three-bed apartment. The lighthouse can be reached by car. Due to roads leading to neighboring places, a regular supply of provisions is not a problem. Dense pine woods surrounding the lighthouse offer a wide range of activities for active holiday lovers who are not primarily interested in suntanning and swimming. The surrounding waters are rich in various types of fish.

During your stay in Veli Rat, you can visit Kornati National Park and Telascica Nature Park nearby. The starting point for trips to Kornati is the place of Sali on the other side of Dugi otok. The lighthouse has always had a lighthouse keeper and there has always been a waiting list, since many lighthouse keepers have been dreaming of spending at least some time in this unique lighthouse. At the moment, the lighthouse keeper Zvone, his wife and daughter Ivana live in the lighthouse. If you decide to spend your holiday in Veli Rat, their hospitality awaits you.

There are two wonderful pebble beaches suitable for small children in the vicinity of the lighthouse. If you go for a walk, you will pass by several charming bays.

Waters surrounding the lighthouse are relatively shallow and great for underwater fishing. The best underwater fishing area is about 2 miles east of the lighthouse, where there are steep cliffs. The Lagnici cliffs surround the shallow waters on the western side where you will find a shipwreck. East of Veli Rat, the seabed is extremely deep, which is somewhat unusual for this part of the island of Dugi otok. (this part can be left out) The islet of Mezanj nearby is famous as a favorable fishing area.

      Interesting to know:
The thick lighthouse walls, that according to legend contain thousands of egg-whites to make them more resistant to wind and sea, protect you from the blazing sun in the summer months. There is an old church under a century-old pine tree in the large paved yard.

        Great holidays
We loved the location of the lighthouse. The apartment was clean and spacious. The kitchen was well equipped. The owners sell vegetables from their own garden (which are delicious). You can see and hear the sea from the windows. The water is crystal clear and a small beach with pebbles is nearby. The campsite close by is also convenient (they have a small shop+fresh bread and a bar/restaurant). Perfect for a calm and relaxing holiday.

A few days of utter bliss at Veli Rat Lighthouse
The location of the lighthouse is simply stunning ... and we spent a wonderful three days here. We had a lovely welcome from the Lighthouse Keeper and his wife Danielle and the spacious apartment was absolutely spotlessly clean. We brought supplies over from Zadar and we cooked a scrummy meal there very easily. We watched the sunset and the sunrise. The views are stunningly beautiful. Absolutely blown away that we had this opportunity ... so romantic, so different, so happy ❤️

        Romantic stay in nature
Stunning location. We had the three person appt which was extremely spacious and filled with sunlight. All windows looked out into the sea. The large kitchen had two windows and a large sofa plus fully equipped kitchen with large fridge, cooker and sink. Lovely bathroom with large walk in shower and another great view from the window. Great bedroom with views over the rocks to the sea. We visited mid May. We snorkelled from outside the lighthouse to a tiny pebbly beach. Having walked two mins back to the lighthouse to shower, we dreamily swung in the old fashioned rope swings before setting up a picnic on one of the sea facing benches to watch the glorious sunset - the only sound the lapping waves on all sides of us. Bliss. We absolutely loved it. It felt like we were the only people living there as the very welcoming Daniele and her husband the lighthouse keeper were always there if we needed anything. We were there mid May and took supplies from Zadar. There was a tiny shop a ten minute drive away which was open in the morning and again at 5pm. An unforgettably romantic chill out.
