Korcula - island Korcula

Tourist destination info Korcula - island Korcula

Korčula City is located on the northeastern end of Korčula Island. It is comprised of the old town on an oval peninsula and newer parts along the East and West coasts of the old center. The first proof of the city was brought by the Byzantine historian and ruler Constantine Porfirogenet in the 10th century, however there are no remains of buildings from that period. There are, however, remains of 13th century walls and decorations which show that the city was surrounded by walls. This was at the time of the Venetian Zorzi family. Legends say that Poseidon kidnapped his beloved Korkyra and moved her to the island which, today, has her name (Korčula = Korkyra). The magnificent world traveler and explorer Marco Polo was born in Korčula and his home still stands on the island. There are other numerous historical monuments which are evidence of the interesting history of the city. See the old city center and its ancient buildings and narrow streets, cathedral of St. Mark, home of Marco Polo, nine churches in the center of the old town, walls which surround the whole island, sea gate, land gate and other interesting sites. The whole island is great for sports and recreation lovers since the clear sea is perfect for almost all types of water sports such as sailing, surfing, water skiing, swimming, scuba diving and numerous others. Korčula Island offers many entertainment possibilities during the summer. Every town on the island has a separate program so you can find entertainment every day. The city holds traditional fishermen’s festivities where you can enjoy Dalmatian music, local food and good wine. Those who wish to be out until the early morning hours can do so in the bars and night clubs, while those who prefer a more intimate setting can visit one of the restaurants and enjoy the music of traditional Dalmatian choirs. If you would like to taste cuisine from Dalmatia and the island, you can do so in restaurants such as “Marco Polo”, “Aborda”, “Bilin Žal”, “Adio Mare”, “Briškula” and “Gajeta”.

      Excellent spot
Absolutely gorgeous and charming place. Despite being a small town, we loved everything: the bakeries, restaurants, bars and cafes. The environment in the summertime is fantastic, mainly by the end of the day, when the sun is saying goodbye. Don''t miss it!
Parking can be a problem. But it''s no different than the rest of Croatia cities by the shore.

If I only had a little island
This was my second time in Korcula and the old town of Korcula. I have been in Croatia many times before and seen many different places with a wide of variety of things to see. But there is something breath taking about otok Korcula. The Adriatic sea, the little island Stupe (with its wonderful locals), the food and the kind people, there is so much to add to that list. I have found my diamand in the sea. There is no need to go anywhere else, I have all I need in a small apartman in Korcula town. If I get the chance I will take my father to Korcula next year and maybe he will understand the amazing in the surroundings.
