Jelsa - island Hvar

Tourist destination info Jelsa - island Hvar

Jelsa is situated in the central part of the ancient island of Hvar, which is considered to be the king among the Dalmatian islands. Jelsa is bounded by two highest island points- St. Nikola on the west and Hum on the east. On the south side, it is bounded by the hills Vrh, Gozd and Samotarac, while on the north side there is a hill Burkovo which protects it from the northern winds. This area was already inhabited in ancient history, after which the Illyrians came. Every town and village on this island has numerous architectural and art monuments which testify about the artificial traditions of the island. Visit numerous historical sites in Jelsa and entire Hvar which testify about the turbulent past which happened on this area. Visit Civitas Vetus Ielsae – the old Jelsa town (contains a partially preserved defense wall, built on a surface of 6,50 ha), St. Mary church (from 1331, the early gothic church was expanded and fortifies in 1535), St. Roko church (first mentioned in 1601, built in the second half of the 16th century), St. Mihovil church (built in 1463 in a gothic style), lapidarium (contains about 20 stone objects from the middle ages of Jelsa) and many other historical sites. One of the most beautiful parks of Dalmatia is located in Jelsa – Perivoj, founded in 1870 on a floodplain. Giant poplars, pines and palms, oleanders, laurels and other Mediterranean plants contribute to its beauty. The Jelsa area has a very indented shore with numerous small islands, coves and points where you can find true pleasure and peace. If you enjoy visiting natural beauties and historical towns, visit Grapceva cave (crib of the Hvar culture and civilization), Tor (Greek tower), Galesnik (Town-fort), Vrboska, Humac (former shepherd village). If you are interested in something more, go and see the airport Vrbanja, the “Pharos” aero club and enjoy a panoramic flight over the island in sport jets. Sports and active vacation enthusiasts can practice basketball, volleyball, football, tennis, mini golf, cycling, diving, walking, hiking, free climbing, different water activities and many other sports. Suring summer, like in any other Dalmatian town, Jelsa also hosts numerous festivities and manifestations. The most famous are the “Fishermen night” and “Wine festivity”. The “Wine festivity” offers the best wines of Hvar, as well as homemade specialties and lots of fun. Entertainment offer is versatile and can satisfy the wishes of all guests – from the youngest to the oldest. There is a discothèque in the center of Jelsa, while the concerts of fun music and Dalmatian folk music are organized on squares and the summer movies stage. If you wish to explore the gastronomy of this area, visit the restaurants “Murvica”, “Huljic”, taverns “Nono”, “Pitve” , “Marko” and enjoy the specialties and delicacies of Jelsa.

Big apartment, near the beach and restaurants
Our family stayed in three apartments as we attended a wedding. The apartment is very big, topless clean and the kitchen had everything we needed. Mina beach is just a little walk away so are restaurants. The owner is very helpful and friendly.

    Beautiful charming small city
Very nice small city with lot of cafeterias. In evening there is lot of restaurants opened offering really everything from pizza to gourmet lobsters. Beaches are very close to city - Mina and Grebascica but both are same type. Beach Soline is a bit better in my opinion but is closer to Vrboska.
Renting of bicycle-car was a bit risky adventure as the technical status was disaster and brakes were not working. When returning there was even nobody who takes care about it.
