Podstrana

Tourist destination info Podstrana

Podstrana is a small tourist town located only 8km from Split between the Žrnovnica and Mutogras Rivers with pebble beaches. Apart from its cultural heritage, wine and olives, the town is also known for its culinary offer and beautiful beaches which stretch for 9km. Podstrana has always been an interesting place to live in, which is why it is full of ancient villas and Renaissance palaces and vacation homes. The first known settlers were the Illyrians, while the oldest part of the town is “Pituntium”. Numerous monuments and archaeological findings are evidence of the towns turbulent past. History lovers can visit the old town, the Cidro house, the Cindro family crest, church of St. George Perun, stone statue of the Blessed Virgin, statue of St. Anthony of Padua, church of St. Anthony and Rocco, parish church in old Podstrana, church of St. Fabian, remains of an ancient villa near Our Lady in Sita and many others. Of the archaeological findings you can visit the megalithic blocks of the original Pituntija walls, Pišćenica mound, section of a Roman mosaic on the old cemetery of St. Martin, Illyrian castles (today’s old town), remains of a Roman stone olive mill, torso of roman deity, late antiquity villa in Polača and many others.

Sports and recreation lovers can enjoy all water sports, beach volleyball, futsal, tennis and numerous other activities. If you prefer Dalmatian cooking, be sure you visit the “San Antonio”, “Zlatni Lav”, “Martin” and “Dioklecijan” restaurants.

Must see places

Split is located only 8km from Podstrana. It is one of the best known and most visited tourist destinations in Croatia and the second largest city in the country.  It is an eternally young city which lives with a slow pace that is very easy to get accustomed to. This city is rich in historical monuments of which we recommend the following: Diocletian’s palace (the heart of the city), the Iron Gate, the statue of bishop Gregory of Nin, the cathedral of St. Duje, church of St. Francis, cathedral of St. Peter, the main court, city basement, St. Anne’s monastery and many others.

Omiš is a small Mediterranean town located at the mouth of the river Cetina. Of its historical characteristics, we emphasize the following: the fortresses Mirabela and Fortica, parish church of St. Michael, Franciscan monastery, churches of St. Peter, Holy Spirit, the Illyrian seminary, old cemetery, medieval town center, pole of shame and the old town lodge. Sports fans can take part in river rafting on the Cetina, free climbing, wind surfing, swimming marathon, beach volleyball and other activities.

Trogir is located in the center of Dalmatia. Its port is preferred by seafarers because of its favorable location and natural protection. It is often named the “museum city” because it is full of historical monuments such as the old city center, Kamerlengo fortress, tower of St. Mark, sculpture of the Blessed John Orsinij, chapel of St. Jeronimo, Ćipiko palace, Renaissance church of St. John the Baptist, portal of Radovan, museum and pinacotheca.
