island Vis

Explore island Vis

The island of Vis is a beautiful Central Dalmatian island located 45km from the mainland. The surface of the island is 90,3 km2. Its longest part, the one which connects the east side to the west side, is 17km long. There are two towns and 11 villages on the island. The climate is Mediterranean and because of its distance from the rest of the islands, as well as from the mainland, it is exposed to stronger wind blows than the neighboring islands. The island of Vis is characterized by clear and beautiful sea, sandy and pebble beaches, as well as numerous coves which present true peace oasis. The population of Vis is engaged in agriculture, fishing and, more recently, tourism. The two main centers of the island are the towns Vis and Komiza.

The town of Vis is located on the north-east side of the island in a naturally protected bay. The town was founded by connecting old settlements Kut and Luka. There are numerous archeological remains in Vis, which tell the story about how the town came to life. You can see numerous ancient arts in Vis, such as the brass head of the goddess Artemis, ceramic vases, male and female heads, a collection of amphora collected from the sea, as well as numerous other. The town is also rich with modern cultural heritage such as numerous villas, summer mansions, palaces and forts. The most valuable sacral monuments are the pre-romantic church of St. Juraj (patron saint of the town of Vis), church of St. Mary in Podselje and church of Our Lady of Spilica (connects Kut and Luka). During the entire year, numerous manifestations are organized in Vis, while the summer remains reserved for the popular cultural summer of Vis which offers numerous concerts and festivities.

The town of Komiza is located in a deep cove (Komiza cove) at the foot of the Hum hill on the western part of the island of Vis. Komiza is a typical Mediterranean town with narrow streets, stone houses and beautiful Mediterranean climate. The population is engaged in viticulture and fishing. Komiza is said to be the place which gave birth to fishing on the east part of the Adriatic. Sports enthusiasts can enjoy a rich offer of sport activities, such as sailing, paragliding, diving, riding, hiking, cycling, tennis, basketball and numerous others. You can reach Vis only by ferry or speedboat from Split which travels 2-3 times a day. On a nice day, it takes 2 hours and 30 minutes to reach Vis.

“If the Adriatic Sea were a king, the island of Vis would be its crown” B. Kirigin
